What is it about outlaws that keeps us fascinated? Rebels, rule-breakers, fugitives and outsiders have been part of our stories for centuries — sometimes as villains, sometimes as heroes, and often somewhere in between.

What makes an outlaw a legend?

Outlaw Legend is a Vienna-based project by Tibi Zwiebolitsch and Gerald Waibel, created in 2009 in cooperation with Siebdruckeria. The project brings the stories of historical outlaws, rebels and social bandits to life through T-shirts, with each design connected to the story of a particular figure.

In this conversation, Makela talks with Tibi about some of these characters, their often surprising stories, and the appeal of people who chose not to follow the rules. They explore what turns an outlaw into a legend — and why these figures still capture our imagination today.
